Hastelloy C276 flanges are forged nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy fittings, built around a chemistry that resists pitting, crevice attack, and stress corrosion cracking in both oxidizing and reducing media, providing resistance across a broad range of oxidizing and reducing environments. That range is the main benefit. C276 can be machined to the required flange dimensions and surface finish, although its work-hardening tendency requires appropriate tooling and machining parameters. Hastelloy C276 pipe flanges are produced as forged rings, so grain flow follows the flange contourrather than getting cut across it. Hastelloy C276 flanges are used in flue gas desulfurization systems, wet chlorine lines, sulfuric and hydrochloric acid piping, and other chemical process circuits where pitting and stress corrosion cracking rule out standard stainless steel. Pharmaceutical and pollution control plants specify them for similar reasons.
ASTM B564 is a specification for wrought nickel alloy forgings, including flanges and other forged components. Chemistry and mechanical testing requirements differ from those of a carbon or stainless steel flange made to A105 or A182. C276 flanges also carry molybdenum and tungsten content that standard grades don't, which is what gives the corrosion resistance.
The key advantage is resistance to pitting, crevice attack, and stress corrosion cracking in oxidizing and reducing environments alike, a rare combination for one alloy. They also generally skip post-weld heat treatment, which is not the case with several other high-nickel grades.
